Februar 2009 | Von atsil | Kategorie:English Read the WorldThe only practical way to approach the problem of migrant minors is through a system of EU institutions and a program of repatriation.International accords forbid the removal of a minor to another state if it cannot be shown that such action is in the child’s best interests. The state must also provide protection for the migrant child similar to what it provides for its citizen children.
A minimum of 4,000 to 5,000 unaccompanied minors will pass through Greece to Italy’s Adriatic ports this year in the attempt to enter other EU countries. A large percentage of these minors are heading to the large immigrant communities in Britain, Germany and Sweden. Thus, this is not simply a Greek or Italian problem; it is one that concerns much of Europe and therefore demands European consideration.
