Hello ralf and DF: There is another "Peace Oil" that has been developed in Israel Palestine with the help of a company in Seattle Washington - Olive Branch Enterprises, my company. This product was actually available before the London-based Peace Oil you are talking about. See http://www.peaceoil.biz. Two Israeli and one Palestinian Fair Trade groups participate. The Palestinian Fair Trade group is based in Jenin, a hot bed of intifada activity. One of the Israeli groups sends a representative to work with a Palestinian farmer in the West Bank near Nablus. The other Israeli group is a cooperative venture of Arab and Jewish woman. They obtain most of their olive oil from Arab farmers in the Galil farming region of Israel. All three of these olive oil sources are mixed in Seattle to become Peace Oil (the US version). The cooperation that occurs among the Druze, Jews, Arabs and Bedouin that make the London-based product is not necessarily entirely initiated by Charities Advisory Trust. It could be part of the trust's marketing plan to pitch it that way so as to justify the incredible price: USD 50 for one bottle! The price for Peace Oil from Olive Branch Enterprises is currently USD 12.50, although it will be going up as sales have been increasing and the current price does not sustain costs.
For more information on the Fair Trade groups that supply Olive Branch's Peace Oil, see:

Also, on the question of whether or not this concept could have originated in Israeli/Palestinian society without outside intervention: I think the original idea was first published by the Israel & Palestine Olive Oil Boards in Jan. 2005. See http://www.foodprocessing.com/industrynews/2005/183.html
I don't know if these Olive Oil boards ever succeeded in acting on the idea, but I have a feeling the Charities Advisory Trust project may be related. Their application to register the "Peace Oil" trademark in England came a bit less than a year after the Israel Olive Board announcement. Olive Branch Enterprises came up with the name "Peace Oil" by sheer coincidence about a half year later, but was able to bring the product to market faster than Charities Advisory Trust. The concept for combining Israeli and Palestinian olive oil was brought to my attention by an Israeli friend in late 2005. He asked if I would be interested in importing a mix of his olive oil and that of a Palestinian friends. He eventually decided against exporting as he didn't feel he had the experience to handle all the complex rules. That is when I started working with Sindyanna which had much experience in this area.
